Assistant Cooks work aboard at-sea processing vessels in the Bering Sea, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands.  They report to the Head Cook.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares midday, evening and night meals (as necessary) for the crew and others on a daily basis
  • capable of using kitchen equiment, tools and supplies 
  • Ensures all food preparation and storage is in compliance with health standards 
  • Bake breads and pastries
  • Plans menus with Head Cook to best utilize inventory
  • Assists with inventory and ordering as requested by Head Cook
  • Assists in the loading and unloading of food and other supplies into various storage areas located on various levels of the vessel.
  • Assists in the preparation of breakfast meals on a daily basis 
  • Clean kitchen area, equipment, and tools after each meal to meet sanitaion standards
  • Washes crew laundry on scheduled basis
  • Encourages and fosters good relationship with crew to ensure mealtimes are enjoyable

Physical Ability and Skills:

  • Work 14 hours per day, 7 days a week in all kinds of weather conditions
  • Understand instructions and safety rules in English
  • Board and exit vessel without assistance by climbing up and down a gangway or Jacob's ladder
  • Capable of climbing and descending steep stairs and vertical ladders
  • Be away from medical attention for up to 3 months
  • Share spaces with others including crew quarters, dining areas and bathrooms


Training and Other Requirements:

  • AK Food handlers permit
  • First Aid/CPR
